How Can We Improve Community & Police Relations?

CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU….

The Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board and the Office of Criminal Justice Services launched the Change Starts Here Campaign as a part of Ohio’s intensive agenda to improve community-police relations. Warhol & WALL ST, a Columbus-based lifestyle marketing and creative development company created the multi-pronged outreach and education campaign geared to raise awareness about community-police relations in Ohio.

As part of the overall scope of responsibility for the Ohio Collaborative, the public awareness campaign will:

  • Educate law enforcement on how to better interact with the community they serve by focusing on appropriate and effective programming especially those programs that promote positive educational interactions between law enforcement and youth in the community.
  • Educate the general public on strategies to improve community-police relations including how to appropriately interact with law enforcement and how law enforcement should appropriately interact with the public; and
  • Educate the community about the duties of law enforcement and the nature of their responsibilities in order to raise citizen’s awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s obligation to protect and strengthen the vital partnership between the community and law enforcement. opens in a new windowGo to Website.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Medina Township Police Department is “a community where the citizens and general public are secure in their homes, schools, houses of worship, places of employment, and all public places; knowing that the Medina Township Police Department serves without prejudice as guardians and agents of justice, in opposition to those who violate the law; while standing form to restore order, safety, and peace of mind for those who are exploited and victimized.”

Mission Statement

The mission statement of the Medina Township Police Department is a dedicated and diverse group of professionals who are committed to working with the community to make the Township of Medina a safe and desirable place to live, work or visit. Our mission is to partner with the community to solve problems and improve public safety in a manner that is fair, impartial, transparent, and consistent.

Core Values

Integrity – We are committed to the enforcement of laws and the preservation of order and property. We are honest, truthful, and consistent in our words and actions, and therefore worthy of the public’s trust. We exercise discretion in a manner that is fair, impartial, transparent and consistent.

Professionalism – We treat the public and our colleagues with courtesy and respect. We understand that our appearance, words, and demeanor contribute to the public’s confidence in us. We are responsive to the community, and we deliver services promptly and efficiently.

Commitment to Excellence – Dedicated to service excellence, we demonstrate innovation, collaboration and transparency, practice effective and accountable use of resources and promote engagement and leadership at all levels.

Fairness and Impartiality – We act with fairness, restraint, and impartiality in carrying out our duties. We work with the community to continually understand and overcome cultural influences and unconscious biases. We understand that our actions, combined with the way treat members of the community, contribute to our “legitimacy” in the eyes of the public.

Teamwork – We work together as one organization in carrying out the mission of the department; our respective units do not act alone from one another. As individual members of the department we are respectful to each other and work collectively to solve problems and serve the needs of the community.

Efficiency – We keep abreast of standard procedures, legal issues, and innovative topics in modern policing through regular training and professional development. We exercise rigor in thinking strategically about identifying trends, exploiting alternative solutions, and solving problems.

Advocacy and Empathy – We have compassion for victims of crime. As members of the community, we have respect for and promote the diversity of the community. We advocate for social and other supportive services for victims, youth, and others involved in the criminal justice system.

On September 12, 2023, the Medina County Safe Communities Coalition came together for their Annual Awards Breakfast. This event is all about honoring the incredible dedication of our local law enforcement, fire safety personnel, and outstanding community members who champion traffic safety.

The coalition, operating under the wing of the Medina County Health Department, unites law enforcement, healthcare agencies, fire departments, non-profits, school districts, the media, and local businesses with a shared mission - to make our roads safer. Their goal: reducing traffic-related injuries and deaths caused by texting and driving, driving under the influence, and promoting seat belt safety on our beloved Medina County roads.

Today, we extend our heartiest congratulations to two exceptional Medina Township Officers who truly deserve the spotlight: Patrolman Matt O’Donnell, recipient of the prestigious 2023 OVI Enforcement award, and Patrolman Shawna Yorks, who proudly takes home the 2023 Click It or Ticket award.

These officers exemplify the commitment and dedication needed to ensure our roads are safer for everyone. THANK YOU for your incredible service and dedication to our community! #SafetyFirst #CommunityHeroes #MedinaCountySafety.
